Welcome to a beautiful world.

Club Heal at Gardens by the Bay

It was a bright and cool day on Wednesday 12 February 2014 and the Club Healians were out in full force – staff, participants and caregivers alike who were eager to see the much talked about Gardens by the Bay.

There were 9 staff, 6 caregivers, 3 volunteers and 22 participants who came in two buses, one from the Bukit Batok East and one from Al-Wehdah in  Geylang. Spirits were high as we were all expecting to see glorious sights of nature in a man-made setting.

We were not disappointed when we first entered the first dome, the Cloud Forest where we were greeted with a magnificent waterfall, created by man recreating a work of God. It was adorned with breathtaking orchids, ferns and other exotic plants which were most amazing in their rich varieties. It was thrilling to walk on a suspended walkways being blown with misty air-conditioning. Even one of our participants who was afraid of heights managed to walk through safely without a panic attack thanks to the two Club Heal staff who accompanied him and encouraged him.

We next entered the Flower Dome which showcased mostly the season’s best pickings  in all its bright colours and glory.

Basithah Zulkifli, 27, programme coordinator reflected, “The trip to Gardens by the Bay helps in two ways. It helps them get out and about being in different surroundings. Because some of them don’t go to places so it is good exposure for them. Second it is the healing properties of nature. My reaction when I saw the waterfall, it was so breathtaking and a lot of them have not had the experience of seeing a waterfall, it is just a natural thing which helps us heal somehow.”

Azlinda, 35 participant said of her magic drawing which she drew the day after the trip at Club Heal, “I drew a pond as I like the view down there. I felt relaxed and I don’t feel like going out of the place because of the beautiful flowers and greenery. I felt like sleeping in the cool air-conditioned comfort and looking at the waterfall.”

The waterfall was really the one that wowed most of Club Healians as our counselor Zainal Abidin Lee, 53, said, “When I just stepped in and saw the waterfall, it is a manmade structure but it is so wonderful. In the Quran, the Garden or Jannah is all about waters flowing in a beautiful garden. Being in the garden setting made us much calmer. The metaphor of a garden with beautiful flowers and trees really strikes home. It is a place free from illnesses, we can forget about them and start appreciating the beauty of Life.”

Mizzy, 32, a participant shared his experience at the Garden by the Bay, “The trip is about going to the gardens full of trees, plants, flowers and learning their names. My favourite flower is the sunflower. I like going on outings because we learn to communicate with each other, interact with the surroundings and learn to relax.”
